Avangrid and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) have commissioned ten turbines at the Vineyard Wind 1 project in the US, delivering more than 136MW to Massachusetts' electric grid.
Currently, Vineyard Wind 1 has installed 47 foundations, transition pieces, and 21 turbines, with the installation of the 22nd turbine in progress.
Once fully operational, the project will be New England's largest renewable energy facility, delivering 806MW of clean electricity - which is enough to power 400,000 homes and businesses.
In February 2024, the Vineyard Wind 1 project delivered approximately 68MW from five turbines to the grid.
Avangrid, a member of the Iberdrola Group, stated that additional power will be delivered sequentially, with each turbine starting production upon completion of the commissioning process.
The power from Vineyard Wind 1 is transmitted to the New England grid at Barnstable through underground cables connected to a substation on Cape Cod.
The completed Vineyard Wind 1 project will feature a total of 62 wind turbines.
Vineyard Wind began its offshore construction activities in late 2022, achieved its first steel-in-the-water in June 2023, and completed the nation's first offshore substation in July 2023.
The construction is supported by the New Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal.
The 806MW project, situated 15 miles off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard, is expected to generate electricity for more than 400,000 homes and businesses.
Additionally, it is projected to reduce carbon emissions by over 1.6 tonnes per year.
