Ameresco Sunel Energy has initiated the construction of Lightsource bp's 560 megawatts peak (MWp) ENIPEAS solar project in Greece.

Ameresco Sunel Energy is a collaboration between Ameresco and Sunel Group, an engineering, procurement and construction specialist.

The ENIPEAS solar project is backed by the European Union's NextGenerationEU fund.

Located in the regions of Larissa and Fthiotida, the project will be completed by the summer of 2026.

The project comprises two clusters: the 400MW Skopia cluster in the south and the 160MW Kalithea cluster in the north.

Together they include 970,000 photovoltaic (PV) modules.

The project will produce 0.90 terawatt hours of electricity annually, sufficient to supply 225,000 households and offset 379kt of carbon emissions annually.

Ameresco CEO George Sakellaris said: “Our efforts align with Lightsource bp’s commitment to deliver clean, secure energy while using local talent as much as possible.”

Lightsource bp, which began its journey in the UK in 2010, has expanded its solar project portfolio to more than 9.5GW across 19 markets globally.

Lightsource BP’s Greece country head Natalia Paraskevopoulou said: “The 560MWp Enipeas project contributes substantially to create a more sustainable future for Greece as it will provide affordable, secure, and cleaner energy and will support the country’s decarbonisation goals and energy independence.

“We are excited to partner with Ameresco Sunel Energy SA on Enipeas, one of the largest clean energy projects of its kind in Europe. Additionally, the Enipeas project will contribute to boosting the local economy.

In April 2023, Ameresco and Sunel Group formed a partnership to bid for 1.5GWp of solar PV and battery energy storage system projects in the UK and Europe.
