Acciona Energía and its local partner Freya Renewables have gained the development rights to build a 160MW wind farm in the Philippines.

The rights were awarded by the Philippines DoE under the fourth open and competitive selection process for renewable energy projects including hydropower, geothermal and wind energy.

Acciona and Freya can explore and develop the wind farm in a predetermined area within the municipality of Pantabangan, 150km north of the Philippines’ capital, Manila.

The project is part of the South East Asian country’s aim of developing renewables to replace its dependence on imported fossil fuels. It has set a target to increase the share of renewables in the national energy mix to 35% by 2030 and 50% by 2040.

Acciona has been present in the country since 2016, operating through its water and infrastructure divisions. It has developed projects including the Cebu Cordova Link Expressway, the DWTP [drinking water treatment plant] Putatan II and the DWTP Laguna Lake.

In October 2023, the company also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the provincial government of Cebu and Freya Renewables to build a 150MW solar plant on the island of Cebu.

In July 2023, Acciona began construction of the 280MW Forty Mile wind farm in Forty Mile No 8 county in the Canadian province of Alberta.

Developed by Renewable Energy Systems Canada, the wind farm is expected to become operational in the first quarter of 2025.

It will be powered by 49 Nordex turbines and will be one of Acciona’s largest wind farms in North America.

It will have the potential for a second phase expansion to raise its capacity by 400MW.
