Wärtsilä has secured a contract to deliver 150MW battery energy storage system (BESS) to Amp Energy in South Australia.
The standalone system, with a 300MWh capacity, is expected to bolster the energy security and reliability amidst the state’s increasing reliance on renewable energy sources.

The Bungama BESS project, which is currently in its first stage, will utilise Wärtsilä’s advanced Quantum High Energy storage technology.
This technology is designed to provide essential grid services such as frequency control ancillary services, fast frequency response, and energy arbitrage, all of which contribute to enhanced grid flexibility and stability.
In addition to the storage technology, the project will incorporate the GEMS Digital Energy Platform for intelligent power control and optimised energy management operations.

This project builds on Wärtsilä’s previous success in South Australia, where the company completed its first BESS deployment in 2023.
It also represents Wärtsilä’s fifth energy storage project in Australia.
Scheduled to begin construction in October 2024, Bungama BESS stage one aims to commence commercial operations in the first quarter of 2026.
Wärtsilä will also provide a long-term service agreement to ensure the project’s ongoing performance and reliability.
The execution of Bungama BESS stage one will be conducted in partnership with Balance of Plant contractor Enerven, marking the fourth collaborative project between Wärtsilä and Enerven.

In June 2024, Wärtsilä launched the Wärtsilä connector module to streamline construction, installation and commissioning of its 18V50SG engine power plants.
