Global technology company Voith has agreed to modernise the Wanjii hydropower plant in Kenya.
The hydropower plant has reportedly been operational for more than six decades.

As part of the modernisation plan, Voith will be replacing the turbines, generators, control technology as well as other electromechanical equipment of the plant.
Located at around 80km from Nairobi, the 7.4MW Wanjii facility is reported to have set a good example–highlighting the importance of a decentralised energy supply in Africa.
By modernising the plant, Voith hopes to increase Wanjii plant production capacity by at least 20%.
Voith expects to complete plant modernisation works by the middle of next year (2019).

By GlobalDataWanjii hydropower plant operator and Kenya’s electricity producer KenGen noted that the upgrade would significantly increase the performance of the plant.
The modernisation of the plant will also see the inclusion of a remote controlled system enabling KenGen to operate and regulate the plant from its headquarters located in Nairobi.
Additionally, Voith will ensure that the plant’s components can be easily replaced easily if necessary in the future.
