Uniper has entered a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Stegra to supply 6 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity for six years to Stegra’s plant in Boden, Northern Sweden.
The deal will span from 2027 to 2032, ensuring that the energy needs of Stegra’s green hydrogen and steel production facilities are met.
Uniper Nordics business development head Patrik Hermansson stated: “We are proud to support the ongoing transition of the energy system by being a reliable and innovative partner to industrial off-takers.”
The Boden plant, currently under construction, will produce green hydrogen, green iron and green steel on a large scale, with an initial annual output target of 2.5 million tonnes of green steel. It is the first greenfield steel mill to be developed in Europe since 1974.
Stegra energy portfolio head Arne Österlind stated: “The agreement with Uniper forms the base for a strategic partnership with a player that can provide us with long-term access to electricity for our plant in Boden, set to produce green hydrogen, green iron and green steel at scale.
“This electricity delivery is central to our strategy and a key step towards accelerating reductions of industrial emissions in Europe.”
