TotalEnergies and Simply Blue Group have formed a joint venture company, TotalEnergies SBE US, for developing floating offshore projects in the US.

The company will make use of TotalEnergies’ knowledge in developing large scale offshore projects and Simply Blue Group’s experience with floating wind power facilities, as well as a team of US offshore wind industry experts.

Projects developed by TotalEnergies SBE US will have the potential to supply clean energy to millions of homes in the US.

TotalEnergies Gas, Renewables and Power president Stéphane Michel said: “Our ambition is to install 100GW of global renewable power generation by 2030, part of which will come from floating offshore wind projects.

“We are convinced of the large potential of floating offshore wind to provide US coasts with renewable electricity, and are committed to contributing our extensive expertise in offshore projects to make it happen.”

Simply Blue CEO Sam Roch-Perks said: “The future and next frontier of US offshore wind is floating. This joint venture with TotalEnergies has everything we need to deliver floating offshore wind on America’s coasts.

“Almost two-thirds of US offshore wind resources are found in deeper waters that require floating wind platforms.

“TotalEnergies SBE US brings together the scale, expertise and international track record to responsibly develop floating offshore wind power on all of America’s coasts.”

TotalEnergies has more than 6GW of offshore wind capacity in development worldwide, more than 40% of which is floating offshore wind.

Simply Blue Group’s total amount of offshore wind capacity in development in the UK and Ireland comes to more than 3.2GW.

Last March, Total agreed to acquire an 80% stake in the 96MW Erebus floating wind project in the UK from Simply Blue Energy.

The project is located in the Welsh Celtic Sea and will be installed in an area with a water depth of 70m.
