TotalEnergies plans to invest €160m ($172.8m) in six new battery storage projects in Germany, totalling 221MW of capacity.
The projects have been developed by TotalEnergies affiliate Kyon Energy. Most will utilise next-generation batteries from another TotalEnergies affiliate, Saft.
Construction commenced at the end of 2024 and commissioning is scheduled for early 2026.
The development is a key step in TotalEnergies’ efforts to enhance the flexibility of Germany’s power system.
The new storage capacity will help mitigate congestion and provide the necessary flexibility to support the rapid expansion of the country’s renewable energy sector.
TotalEnergies chairman and CEO Patrick Pouyanné stated: “We are delighted with this significant step forward in the development of our integrated power activities in Germany, Europe’s largest electricity market.
“The implementation and integration of all these battery projects will allow us to supply our customers with clean firm power, contributing directly to our targeted 12% profitability in this activity.”
TotalEnergies’ German project pipeline contains 13GW of renewables, including 7GW of onshore wind and solar and 6.5GW of offshore wind, in addition to 2GW of battery capacity.
In July 2024, the company launched a 100MW/200 megawatt hours (MWh) battery storage project in Dahlem, in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, with an investment of more than €75m – the first approved project from Kyon Energy’s pipeline since its acquisition.
In March 2025, TotalEnergies and its partners commissioned the 640MW Yunlin offshore wind farm in Taiwan.
Situated 15km from the western coast of Taiwan in water depths down to 35m, the project comprises 80 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 8MW.
