Technip Energies has secured a front-end engineering design (FEED) contract for Uniper‘s new combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power station with carbon capture and storage (CCS) at Connah’s Quay in the northwest of England.

The proposed Connah’s Quay low carbon power project will integrate into the Hynet Cluster’s CO₂ transport and storage infrastructure.

Uniper is focusing on developing the first phase of the CCGT with the CCS project to commence commercial operations before the end of 2030, adhering to the UK government Track 1 expansion.  

If approved and developed, the power station will be constructed in two phases, delivering 1.3 GW of low-carbon power and enhancing energy security while supporting decarbonisation efforts.

Technip Energies will be collaborating with Balfour Beatty and GE Vernova to provide FEED services to integrate CCGT with carbon capture.  

Uniper Connah’s Quay project manager Helen Rogers stated: “The proposed project would enable us to continue to reliably and efficiently generate electricity when it is needed, contributing to future security of supply as well as contributing to economic growth in the region.  

“The award of the FEED contract competition represents a significant step and will result in one contractor being selected for EPC [engineering, procurement and construction] to build the plant.” 

In December 2024, Technip Energies and GE Vernova were awarded a contract for the Net Zero Teesside power project, a pioneering gas-fired power station incorporating carbon capture and storage.
