Tata Motors and Tata Power Renewable Energy have partnered to develop a 131MW wind-solar hybrid renewable energy project, marking a significant step in India’s clean energy sector.

The project will generate approximately 300 million units of clean electricity annually, aiding Tata Motors in its commitment to achieve net-zero emissions.

The power purchase agreement (PPA) signed between the two Tata entities will cater exclusively to Tata Motors’ six manufacturing facilities in Maharashtra and Gujarat.

The project is expected to offset more than 200,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year, contributing to the reduction of the carbon footprint associated with the production of commercial and passenger vehicles.

This initiative is a key component of Tata Motors’ sustainability strategy, which aims to meet its RE-100 commitment well before the 2030 target.

Tata Motors vice-president operations commercial vehicles Vishal Badshah said: “As a key driver of India’s mobility and logistics ecosystem, Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles is proud to lead by example in sustainable manufacturing.

“This project reinforces our commitment to integrate renewable energy into our operations and reducing our carbon footprint while meeting our RE-100 goals. It also reflects our broader purpose of delivering mobility solutions that are sustainable at every stage – from production to performance.”

The company is focused on transitioning to clean energy and bolstering climate-resilient operations, in line with its ambition to achieve net-zero emissions and promote environmentally responsible manufacturing practices.

In a related development, Tata Power has received approval from the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission to set up a 100MW battery energy storage system in Mumbai by 2027.

This system will be equipped with “black start” capabilities, ensuring rapid power restoration to critical services during grid failures, thus preventing widespread blackouts and enhancing the city’s power network resilience.
