Strata Clean Energy has initiated construction on the Justice Energy Storage project in Maricopa County, Arizona, aiming to strengthen the state’s grid reliability.
The 150MW/600MWh facility is set to become operational by April 2026, providing four hours of battery capacity to power approximately 24,000 homes.
The Justice project will play a crucial role in storing surplus renewable energy generated during the day and releasing it during the peak evening demand, which is particularly important during Arizona’s summer heatwaves.
Strata Clean Energy chief commercial officer Tiago Sabino Dias said: “This project underscores our long-term commitment to enabling a resilient, decarbonised energy future.
“Justice will help Arizona move closer to its clean energy goals while supporting the economic vitality of the region.”
The Justice project was awarded through Arizona Public Services (APS) All-Source RFP launched in June 2023 and is part of a 20-year tolling agreement between Strata and APS.
APS vice president of resource management Brian Cole said: “At APS, we plan years in advance and maintain a balanced and diverse energy portfolio to serve our customers. With the addition of the Justice Energy Storage project, we’ll continue to deliver reliable and affordable energy as we power Arizona’s future growth.”
Strata will develop, own, and operate the project, which will add to its portfolio of renewable and energy storage assets.
In addition to Justice, Strata Clean Energy commenced the construction of the 255MW/1.02GWh Scatter Wash battery storage complex in Phoenix in January last year.
Scatter Wash will provide reliable energy to APS customers, supporting increased power demand and storing renewable energy from solar plants.
