SSE Renewables, a subsidiary of Scottish energy company SSE, has begun construction on the 64MW Jubera onshore wind farm in Spain – the company’s inaugural venture in the Spanish onshore wind market.

Civil engineering works have commenced at the wind farm’s site in the La Rioja region.

The wind farm will be operational by the end of 2025.

It is located in the town of Santa Engracia del Jubera and will be powered by 11 Nordex wind turbines.

Its construction will support 200 full-time direct and indirect construction jobs.

The project will generate sufficient renewable energy to power 55,000 homes each year while offsetting 34,000 tonnes of carbon emissions.

The wind farm has an operational lifespan of 30 years.

SSE Renewables Europe onshore renewables director Finlay McCutcheon stated: “This is another important moment for SSE Renewables as we enter construction on our first onshore wind project in Spain.

“This marks our second onshore project in southern Europe to enter into construction and is testament to the hard work undertaken by our southern European team over the past few years to bring these projects forward. Spain is an important market for SSE Renewables.

“We are actively progressing a 320MW portfolio of late-stage development projects in Spain, which we are working hard to bring forward to construction in due course to help meet the country’s ambitious renewable energy targets.”

Jubera is the second project SSE Renewables has initiated since acquiring its southern Europe pipeline in 2022.

The company began construction on the 28MW Chaintrix-Bierges and Vélye Wind Farm in north-eastern France in September 2023.

As well as progressing its 2.4GW pipeline of secured projects in the region, the company is advancing 2.5GW of future onshore wind and solar project prospects.

In December 2023, SSE Renewables also obtained Section 36 planning consent from the Scottish Government for the 125MW Cloiche wind farm.

This facility will be built alongside the Stronelairg wind farm and the Glendoe hydroelectric project, which features 29 turbines with a tip height of 149.9m.
