TenneT has signed a realisation agreement with a consortium comprising SSE Renewables and pension investor APG, on behalf of pension fund ABP (APG/ABP), for an offshore grid connection of the IJmuiden Ver Alpha wind farm, 60km offshore the Netherlands.

The project is the first wind farm to adopt the 2GW direct current standard, and will be operational by the end of 2029.

The agreement facilitates the development and construction of the necessary grid infrastructure to connect the IJmuiden Ver Alpha wind farm to the Dutch high-voltage grid.

The tender was secured by the consortium in June 2024.

TenneT chief operating officer Maarten Abbenhuis stated: “The signing of this implementation agreement marks the start of the cooperation between TenneT and the consortium that will build IJmuiden Ver Alpha. This consortium has a strong Dutch connection through the involvement of ABP and APG, combined with the experienced UK developer SSE Renewables.

“Together we have the ambition to successfully develop this first 2GW connection and wind farm. It is an important step towards making the Dutch energy supply more sustainable for consumers and industry. With this first 2GW project, the Netherlands is once again demonstrating that energy transition and respect for nature can go hand in hand.”

Electricity generated from the offshore wind farm will be brought onshore at Borssele and converted to alternating current at a converting station. The power will then be transported to the high-voltage grid to end users.

SSE Renewables Netherlands director Jasper Vis stated: “With the signing of the realisation agreement, we are taking another important step to progress the development of the 2 GW Alpha site in the IJmuiden Ver wind farm zone.

“This represents an unrivalled opportunity for our consortium of SSE Renewables with ABP/APG to work collaboratively with TenneT to realise the potential of this innovative new 2GW offshore wind farm. If approved for delivery, this wind farm can supply green energy to Dutch consumers via TenneT’s next generation of connections.”

The Netherlands currently has 4.7GW of installed offshore wind capacity and aims to reach 21GW by 2032.

TenneT is realising seven new offshore grid connections for offshore wind farms in the Dutch North Sea by this date. This will use a 2GW direct current connection, equivalent to three times the power consumed by the city of Amsterdam.

The adoption of direct current technology leads to lower transmission losses over long distances and higher power, requiring fewer cables and platforms, thus reducing space demand.
