US-based telecommunications company Sprint has signed a 12-year virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) with Duke Energy Renewables for 173MW of wind power from Maryneal windpower project.
Located in Nolan County, Texas, the 182MW Maryneal windfarm will be built and operated by the Duke Energy Renewables.
The project is expected to commence operations in 2020 and is expected to generate enough clean energy to power 54,000 households in the US, which is also the equivalent to taking 96,000 cars off the road per year.
Sprint Foundation chairman Doug Michelman said: “Sprint is serious about minimising its carbon impact, and operating as a more sustainable company.
“This wind project will help us make substantial progress towards offsetting the energy we use across our operations, including our headquarters, retail stores, call centres and cell towers.”
The long-term VPPA agreement will help the telecommunications company to minimise carbon footprint. Furthermore, out of its total electricity portfolio, Sprint will be able to draw around 30% from renewable energy.

By GlobalDataAdditionally, the VPPA agreement is expected to complement its sustainability strategy, which was launched in 2008. Duke Energy Renewables will have more than 3,000MW wind capacity in the US when the windfarm is completed.
During the peak construction period, the project is expected to create approximately 200 jobs. The windfarm will be equipped with 38 4.8-MW wind turbines, which will be supplied by Nordex Acciona.
Duke Energy Renewables president Rob Caldwell said: “Wind power is contributing to a cleaner, stronger U.S. economy and the Maryneal Windpower project further expands our renewable energy presence in Texas.
“We’re excited to work with Sprint to create jobs, strengthen the local economy and generate clean energy.”
Duke Energy stated that it is on track to own or purchase 8,000MW of wind, solar and biomass energy by 2020.
