Canadian utility-scale solar energy developer SkyPower is planning to build a 1GW project in Uzbekistan with an estimated $1.3bn foreign direct investment.

The project is reported to be the first solar power project in the country and the largest foreign direct investment in Uzbekistan’s history.

SkyPower has also signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Uzbek Government, whereby the latter has agreed to purchase power from an international private company.

Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyyoyev has also signed a decree suggesting the government’s full support of the project and sovereign guarantees.

As part of the agreement, SkyPower will be working with state-owned utility company Uzbekenergo.

The solar energy project will also be the first public-private partnership between Uzbekistan and a North American company, which will see the creation of new employment opportunities in the region.

The project will also help the country to meet its 2030 Paris Climate commitments while bringing clean power to the people of Uzbekistan.
