Siemens Gamesa has signed a subcontract with Ørsted to supply wind turbines for the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project founded by Dominion Energy in Virginia, US.
Last year, Ørsted partnered with Dominion Energy as part of an initiative to deliver renewable energy in Virginia. The offshore wind project is said to be the first of its kind in federal waters.

Under the contract, Siemens Gamesa will supply two units of 6MW SWT-6.0-154 wind turbines with potential for total generated power of 12MW. These units will be used to build the wind project.
Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy, Offshore North America vice-president Joergen Scheel said: “We have always believed in the future of offshore wind power in the US, and with so much wind potential off the Virginia coast, we are excited to finally add our state-of-the-art turbine technology to the country’s energy mix.”
The company plans to produce the blades required for this contract at its manufacturing facility in Aalborg, Denmark, while the nacelle assemblies will be supplied from the plant in Cuxhaven, Germany.
Deliveries for the project are expected to commence during 2020, following which Ørsted will install the turbine components on monopile foundations.

A two-turbine demonstration project, the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind is set to be constructed by Ørsted in 112,700 acre area situated around 27 miles off the Atlantic coast of Virginia.
