Wind turbine manufacturer Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) has secured three new contracts in Chile from undisclosed customers for the supply of 359MW worth of wind turbines.

Under the contracts, the company will install and commission 82 SG 4.5-145 turbines with flexible power rating.

SGRE will provide operation and maintenance services to some of these turbines for up to 15 years. The company intends to begin turbine installation works in 2020.

The contracts take the company’s order entry in the country to 640MW for the fiscal year 2019, a record high for the company.

With the latest contracts, the Spanish company has further strengthened its position in the Chilean wind energy market.

Siemens Gamesa tweeted: “Did we break a record in Chile? Yes! Thanks to our 3 new 359 MW contracts. The supply and delivery of the 82 wind turbines are scheduled for 2020.”

Additionally, the three wind projects are expected to support the country’s decarbonisation programme, including the closure of 28 coal-fired plants. GlobalData found that Chile’s non-hydro renewable energy reached 4.5GW at the end of 2018, 19.1% of the country’s energy mix.

Chilean renewable energy association ACERA reported that the country has an installed capacity of 5.6GW renewable energy, which includes approximately 1.9GW wind power.

SGRE has been active in the international market recently. As well as in Chile, the company has agreed to develop the 250MW West Bakr windfarm in Egypt.

Located in the Gulf of Suez and owned by renewable energy company Lekela, the windfarm is expected to become fully operational in 2021.
