Wind turbine manufacturer Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) has secured three new contracts in Chile from undisclosed customers for the supply of 359MW worth of wind turbines.
Under the contracts, the company will install and commission 82 SG 4.5-145 turbines with flexible power rating.
SGRE will provide operation and maintenance services to some of these turbines for up to 15 years. The company intends to begin turbine installation works in 2020.
Siemens Gamesa Latam onshore managing director Jorge Lobatón said: “We are very pleased to extend our regional leadership to Chile, where we have closed our strongest year ever.
“The Siemens Gamesa 4.X platform has been instrumental to cement that leadership as it is a perfect fit for the local market, significantly contributing to improving our customers’ business cases.”
The contracts take the company’s order entry in the country to 640MW for the fiscal year 2019, a record high for the company.

Additionally, the three wind projects are expected to support the country’s decarbonisation programme, including the closure of 28 coal-fired plants. GlobalData found that Chile’s non-hydro renewable energy reached 4.5GW at the end of 2018, 19.1% of the country’s energy mix.
Chilean renewable energy association ACERA reported that the country has an installed capacity of 5.6GW renewable energy, which includes approximately 1.9GW wind power.
SGRE has been active in the international market recently. As well as in Chile, the company has agreed to develop the 250MW West Bakr windfarm in Egypt.
Located in the Gulf of Suez and owned by renewable energy company Lekela, the windfarm is expected to become fully operational in 2021.
