Sembcorp Energy UK (SEUK), a subsidiary of Singapore-based energy and urban development company Sembcorp Industries, is set to build a 360MW battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Wilton International industrial site in Teesside, UK.

The BESS facility will be built in tranches on land already owned by SEUK with established connectivity, allowing batteries to be deployed quickly.

The company claims that it will be Europe’s largest BESS and help the UK meet its net-zero targets.

SEUK currently operates 70MW of battery capacity at the site, with 50MW of capacity in the pipeline and expected to become operational next year.

The company said that its portfolio has the capacity to supply power to the national grid in a short span of time, ensuring a stable energy system while supporting the UK’s low-carbon transition.

Sembcorp Industries UK and Middle East CEO Andy Koss said: “With a growing reliance on renewables, the UK energy system needs to be flexible and able to respond quickly to changes.

“Sembcorp Energy UK is committed to accelerating the energy transition with sustainable solutions such as batteries.

“Additionally, the location of 360MW of batteries at Wilton International strengthens Teesside’s green regeneration and position as a hub of low-carbon innovation in the North-East.”

In July, SEUK announced a 300MW net-zero emission plant, Whitetail Clean Energy to be built at the Wilton International site.

This plant, together with the expansion of SEUK’s battery portfolio, is intended to support SEUK’s growth.

Once all these projects have been initiated, they will increase SEUK’s total energy portfolio to more than 1.6GW, almost 500MW of which will be supplied by batteries.

The company claims to hold one of the largest battery portfolios in the UK.

Earlier this month, Sembcorp Industries subsidiary Sembcorp Utilities agreed to develop renewable projects with 1.5GW of capacity in Vietnam alongside Vietnamese energy company BCG Energy.
