Westinghouse Electric has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Seaspan for the production of essential components for the AP1000 and AP300 small modular reactors (SMRs).
The MoU will support nuclear new-build projects in Canada and around the world, and include the manufacturing of components such as pipe spools and steel structures.
Seaspan Shipyards strategy, business development and communications senior vice-president Dave Hargreaves stated: “Seaspan’s proven experience in custom, high-quality fabrication and manufacturing in support of both our large shipbuilding and our complex repair and overhaul projects has positioned Seaspan to pursue work in adjacent markets, such as the nuclear industry.”
For every AP1000 unit constructed outside Canada, Westinghouse could contribute almost C$1bn ($726m) in Canadian dollars to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) through local suppliers.
The agreement strengthens Westinghouse’s commitment to the Canadian economy and the development of the nation’s nuclear supply chain.
Westinghouse noted that its AP1000 reactor, which is the only Generation III+ reactor in operation today, is at the forefront of the company’s collaborations with Canadian suppliers.

By 2030, it is anticipated that there will be 18 units based on AP1000 technology in operation globally.
In addition to the AP1000, Westinghouse is working with the Canadian supply chain on the AP300 SMR, a 300MW single-loop pressurised water reactor, and the eVinci microreactor.

“Seaspan’s manufacturing expertise and ability to deliver on large-scale projects will make it a valuable partner to support advanced reactor projects in Canada and beyond.”
In September 2024, Westinghouse Electric partnered with Hyundai Engineering & Construction to explore nuclear power plant opportunities in Sweden and Finland.
