RWE has secured planning approval for its 660MW Nordseecluster A offshore wind project in Germany from the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency.

Nordseecluster A is the first phase of the company’s 1.6GW Nordseecluster offshore wind project.

The Nordseecluster offshore wind project is under construction approximately 46km north of the German island of Borkum and 50km north of the island of Juist.

Construction of North Sea Cluster A is set to begin in 2025, with full commissioning planned for early 2027.

The North Sea Cluster A will feature 44 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 15MW, and is projected to be fully grid-connected by early 2027.

The green electricity generated will be transmitted via the DolWin Kappa converter platform.

RWE noted that the second expansion stage, North Sea Cluster B, will add 900MW of capacity and is set to commence commercial operations in early 2029.

RWE offshore wind chief executive Sven Utermohlen stated: “I am very pleased that with the approvals from the BSH for the North Sea Cluster A, the lights are now green and that we can start construction at sea next year.

“We already have six wind farms off the German coasts in our portfolio. With the North Sea Cluster, we are continuing to drive forward the expansion of offshore wind energy. This is a good signal for the energy transition in Germany and for RWE.”

In May 2024 RWE assumed complete ownership of the 1.6GW Nordseecluster offshore wind complex by buying out project co-developer Northland Power’s stake.

Northland sold its 49% interest in NSC to RWE for €35m ($37.57m).
