RWE has commenced construction on three battery energy storage systems (BESS) with a combined capacity of 450MW in Texas, US.
The three BESS facilities that the company plans to build are called Crowned Heron 1 and 2, and Cartwheel 1.
Crowned Heron 1 and 2, each with a capacity of 150MW (300MWh), are situated in Fort Bend County and are scheduled for completion in mid- and late 2025, respectively.
The Cartwheel project, identical in capacity to the Crowned Heron installations and located in Sulphur Springs, is expected to be operational by mid-2025.
This project complements RWE’s existing Bright Arrow solar and energy storage venture, which was announced earlier this year.
Together, these three assets will offer 900MWh of storage capacity, contributing to RWE’s ambitious global target of achieving 6GW of battery storage by 2030.

By GlobalDataUpon completion, the Crowned Heron 1 and 2 and Cartwheel BESS projects will provide essential energy storage capacity that will enhance the stability and resilience of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas grid.
RWE’s latest projects increase its construction portfolio to 931MW across Texas, California, and Arizona.
RWE Clean Energy Development and Utility-Scale Renewables head Hanson Wood said: “These battery storage projects mark a significant step in our ongoing commitment to enhancing the energy infrastructure in Texas, while growing our energy storage portfolio.
“When completed and operating, our Crowned Heron 1 and 2 and Cartwheel battery projects will serve as reliable energy storage solutions to enhance grid stability and support the state’s rapidly growing renewables sector.”
In a related development, RWE has forged a contract with Steelwind Nordenham for the manufacture of up to 300 monopile foundations for its European offshore wind projects.
Steelwind has committed to reserving capacity for 320,000 tonnes of steel at its Nordenham facility.
This allocation, spanning 24 months starting from 2027, will enable the production of approximately 200 monopile foundations.
Last month, RWE began construction of a high-speed BESS at its Moerdijk power plant in the Netherlands.
