Energy major RWE has acquired a large land option in the north-east of England for a new green hydrogen plant. The company plans to build an electrolyser with a maximum capacity of 260 megawatts electric (MWe) that, when complete, will be able to produce up to five tonnes of green hydrogen per hour.
The land in the heart of the Teesside Industrial Area sits next to major industrial energy users as well as planned hydrogen pipelines, which could potentially aid industrial decarbonisation in the north-east of England.
Speaking to reNews, RWE UK chair Tom Glover said: “This is a really significant step towards RWE’s ambitions for the production of green hydrogen in Teesside.
“We have secured land and have already completed feasibility and initial environmental studies with an aim to be operational by 2028. Detailed discussions with potential industrial customers have started, exploring ways the hydrogen produced can help them to decarbonise.
“It is an exciting project and we are motivated by the prospect of bringing major green investment to the region.”
RWE has recently made significant moves to expand its portfolio in the UK. Earlier in March, the company announced that it has begun construction on seven new solar energy and battery storage projects in England, which when completed will provide 330MW of new clean energy capacity for the UK. Last month, the company closed a transaction with Masdar to collaborate on the major Dogger Bank offshore wind project, with RWE leading development, construction and operation of its section of the project.
