Reliance Infrastructure (RInfra) has secured a Rs36.4bn ($560m) contract for work related to two 800MW supercritical coal-based upper thermal power projects in the Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu, a state in the southern part of India.

RInfra secured the contract from Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) for a balance-of-plant (BoP) package and allied civil works.

The company will be responsible for the designing, engineering, supplying, erecting, testing and commissioning of a BoP package and allied civil works on an engineering procurement contract (EPC) basis.

“We will leverage our experience of execution of different types of power projects, from supercritical coal-fired to advanced class gas turbine.”

The project is expected to be commissioned in 36 months.

The firm’s EPC division has secured the contract in an international competitive bidding process. Firms such as BHEL, L&T, Tata Projects and BGR took part in the bidding.

Following this contract, RInfra’s EPC order book has reached Rs150m ($2.3m). CEO Arun Gupta said: “This is a prestigious project for us and will add to our existing credentials of executing large, complex projects in record time and at a competitive cost.
