By GlobalDataUnder the contract, valued at around $900m, Prysmian will provide ±525kV class HVDC cable to transmit enough renewable energy efficiently to power more than 1.2 million homes.
The award is subject to the contract being finalised.
Jingoli Power will carry out the construction of the project, which is currently under finalisation and will be added to the overall contract value.
As a full turnkey contractor, Prysmian plans to begin cable production in 2023.
These cables will be produced at its facility in Abbeville, South Carolina.
The 350-mile-long project will require 700 miles of paired cross-linked polyethylene class cables and will be installed underground primarily along existing railroad rights-of-way.
The installed cable will connect SOO Green’s converter station in northern Iowa to its Illinois converter station in Chicago.
Upon completion of the project, SOO Green will be able to deliver low-cost renewable energy to population centres from Chicago to the mid-Atlantic region.
Prysmian Group CEO Valerio Battista said: “After the award of flagship projects such as the Vineyard offshore wind farm and the project to upgrade the Washington DC area’s power transmission system, the opportunity to supply HVDC cable for the innovative SOO Green project further solidifies Prysmian Group as the partner of choice for the US interconnector market.
“To further support this ambition, we will upgrade [our] Abbeville [manufacturing] plant and create domestic clean energy manufacturing jobs.”
Prysmian is currently involved with the cable route at the 1.4GW Sofia Offshore Wind Farm project on Dogger Bank, UK.
The company will supply onshore export cable from a point between Redcar and Marske-by-the-Sea to a new converter station before it is linked to the existing National Grid substation in Lackenby, Teesside.
