Energy storage solutions provider Powin has partnered with BHE Renewables to deliver one of the largest solar and storage microgrids in the US.

Located in Ravenswood, West Virginia, the project aims to supply Titanium Metals (TIMET), a subsidiary of Precision Castparts, with renewable energy for the manufacturing of titanium products for the aerospace industry.

Powin will deliver a 50MW Centipede Stack800 battery energy storage system, engineered to discharge energy for 10 to 12 hours.

The system will be a key component of the microgrid, which also includes a 106MW solar array.

The collaboration represents one of Powin’s initial projects that adhere to the domestic content requirements of the Inflation Reduction Act.

The legislation encourages projects such as this by offering incentives for using domestically sourced materials and labour.

BHE Renewables, a division of Berkshire Hathaway Energy, will be responsible for the construction and operation of the solar and battery system.

BHE Renewables president and CEO Alicia Knapp stated: “Powin is a trusted partner who was uniquely able to meet our commercial and technical specifications.

“Their expertise and innovative approach were essential in providing the best technical solution available to enable us to deliver the Ravenswood microgrid and meet domestic content requirements, using the benefits of the Inflation Reduction Act to drive economic revitalisation in West Virginia.”

The project is scheduled to begin with initial deliveries in 2025 and reach full capacity by 2027, aligning with TIMET’s progression to full production.

Powin CEO Jeff Waters stated: “This initiative not only showcases the scalability and reliability of our energy storage solutions but also underscores our commitment to advancing clean energy and economic growth in the US.

“By meeting domestic content requirements, we’re proud to contribute to the reshoring of critical energy infrastructure manufacturing.”

In May 2023, Apex Clean Energy and Powin agreed to develop two new battery storage projects in Texas.
