Renewable energy provider Pivot Energy has announced a five-year framework agreement with Microsoft to develop up to 500MW of community-scale solar energy projects across the US between 2025 and 2029.

The agreement will allow Pivot to develop around 150 solar projects in 100 communities across 20 states including Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Maryland, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The Renewable Energy Credits (REC) from the project will be bought by Microsoft for a 20-year term, with the first projects expected to begin at the end of this year.

Tom Hunt, CEO of Pivot Energy, said: “An economy fuelled by clean, distributed energy can do more than provide power at low cost; it drives growth and success in communities across the nation. This collaboration between Pivot Energy and Microsoft exemplifies the power and impact that distributed generation can have.”

According to a press release, the agreement represents Pivot’s largest REC agreement and marks Microsoft’s first major distributed generation portfolio.

As the project will lead to an increase in renewable energy generation to meet customer electricity needs, it will support the tech giant’s goal of reducing its scope 3 emissions by more than half by 2030.

Pivot has been expanding its community initiatives, working with a diverse range of subcontractors, partnering with workforce development organisations and hiring local talent. It hopes to lower energy bills for low-income subscribers.
