NKT has commenced slipform casting of concrete for a third extrusion tower at the world’s offshore high-voltage cable factory, located in Karlskrona, Sweden.
The development is a response to the surging demand for power cables that support the transition to renewable energy.
One truck each hour is now delivering concrete to the construction site. The 200-metre tower will become the second tallest in Sweden.
NKT’s expansion, driven by an unprecedented order backlog, is essential for meeting the increased demand for high-voltage offshore cables.
NKT executive vice-president and head of HV Solutions Karlskrona Darren Fennell stated: “The tower will significantly strengthen our ability to meet the growing demand for larger and longer high-voltage offshore cables essential for the green transition.
“The ongoing investment is central to the execution of our large order backlog and prepares us for the positive development we expect in the high-voltage power cable market. With the capacity expansion, we continue to be a leading power cable provider for the global energy infrastructure.”

By GlobalDataThe extrusion tower plays a vital role in insulating the high-voltage power cables manufactured at the Swedish facility. Its construction is part of a broader investment strategy in NKT’s high-voltage power cable sector, which also includes a second cable-laying vessel, to become operational by 2027.
NKT is set to recruit 500 new employees by the same year as the company expands.
Slipform casting is a Swedish construction innovation that allows for continuous vertical progress of the formwork, ensuring the tower’s rapid growth at an estimated 2.6 meters per day.
NKT anticipates that the slipform casting process for the tower will be completed by the fourth quarter of 2024.
