Cable systems and services provider Nexans has strengthened its partnership with TenneT by securing the LanWin2 project agreement.

Valued at €1bn ($10.3bn), the project falls under the TenneT frame agreement awarded in May 2023.

The LanWin2 project involves the engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) of 525 kV high-voltage direct current, cross-linked polyethylene onshore and offshore export cable systems.

The 250km long transmission system is part of TenneT’s 2GW offshore grid connection programme in the German North Sea, with commissioning expected in 2030.

LanWin2 will deliver 2GW of renewable wind energy, enhancing energy security in Germany.

Two direct current connections, LanWin2 and LanWin3, will be supplied electricity from the HeideHub, a multiterminal hub in the Heide search area.

Each grid connection will consist of an offshore converter in the North Sea and an onshore converter in the Heide region.

In the offshore converter, the three-phase current generated by wind farms will be converted into direct current and transported to the mainland via the cable system.

A high-performance cable system, comprising a positive and negative pole and a metallic return conductor, will be linked to the converters.

The electricity will travel further through underground cables from the landing point on the Schleswig-Holstein coast to the onshore converter where the direct current will be transformed back into three-phase current and integrated into the extra-high voltage grid.

The project underscores Nexans’s ongoing collaboration with TenneT, following the BalWin3 and LanWin4 projects announced in March 2024, to develop infrastructure supporting Germany and Europe’s renewable energy future.
