US-based Westinghouse Electric Company has entered a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with turbine manufacturer PJSC Turboatom to increase the capacity of nuclear power plants in Ukraine.
In collaboration with Polenergia International and EDF Trading, Westinghouse previously provided a feasibility study report for the project.
In addition, Ukraine’s Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry approved analysis on the ‘Energy Bridge Ukraine – European Union’ project.
Expected to be implemented jointly by state-owned and private companies, the Energy Bridge Project will require a significant power uprate of existing Energoatom VVER-1000 reactors in Ukraine.
The country currently operates 13 VVER-1000 type reactors.
Westinghouse Electric Company Northern and Eastern Europe vice-president and managing director Aziz Dag said: “This strategic cooperation with Turboatom is an excellent example of how Westinghouse is committed to providing our customer Energoatom with innovative, technical solutions to further improve plant capacity, efficiency, and safety.
