Vattenfall is set to commence construction of Denmark’s 406MW Horns Rev 3 offshore windfarm in the North Sea.
To be equipped with 49 MHI Vestas 8.3MW turbines, the farm is expected to power around 425,000 Danish households annually.
Vattenfall Wind Business head Gunnar Groebler said: “Horns Rev 3 is the first of three offshore farms that Vattenfall will construct in Denmark in the coming years.
“These windfarms will, in the highest degree, contribute to our strategy to have a fossil free energy production within one generation.”
The foundations of the farm comprise 40m-50m steel monopiles, with a diameter of 6.5m. Each weighing up to 610t, they are driven around 30m into the seabed to support the turbines.
The first four monopiles had already been loaded onto a vessel in the Netherlands and driven into the seabed. The next set of four monopiles will be loaded in the Danish Esbjerg Harbour in mid-October.
