Siemens, Power Analytics (PA) and Booz Allen Hamilton (BAH) have partnered to conduct a study for the Village of Sherburne in New York, US which will evaluate the feasibility of a community microgrid installation.

The Sherburne community had won $100,000 in microgrid funding in the initial round of a state competition for the technology, which had been developed by the three partners.

Village of Sherburne Mayor William Acee said: "The microgrid concept is something we have thought about for a long time and working together we hope to have a very competitive application for round two."

The competition, titled NY Prize, is sponsored by New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).

"PA and BAH will work with the village community in Sherburne to come up with the most efficient way for microgrid development."

It is in line with New York’s Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) plan, which aims to boost the energy infrastructure in the state and reduce the financial impact of the power outages caused due to weather anomalies.

The three firms are now expected to study the microgrid structure and help in the initial construction of the system.

While PA and BAH will work with the village community in Sherburne to come up with the most efficient way for microgrid development, Germany-based Siemens will help in its set up.

The project will be dependent on multiple power sources including a combined heat and power generator along with renewable energy sources, such as solar photovoltaics (PV).

Initially, the microgrid is expected to boost reliability and resiliency of power supply for the village hall, fire and police departments, a health clinic, and a wastewater treatment plant in Sherburne.
