Siemens has manufactured and tested one of the largest compressor rotors in the world at its facility in Duisburg, Germany.

The first-stage impeller has a diameter of 1.8m and is reported to be one of the largest installed on an integrally geared compressor.

Siemens' power and gas product development and technology for the dresser-rand business head Thomas Moenk said: “This project proves that we have the necessary capabilities to provide large air separation plants with the appropriate compression equipment.

“The STC-GV compressors with their customised design are the largest integrally geared main air compressors ever built. This is a tremendous demonstration of our technical expertise.”

The compressor rotor has been developed for Air Products, a UK-based company. The firm ordered 19 compressor rotors for an air separation unit of the Jazan integrated gasification combined cycle power plant (IGCC) in Saudi Arabia. This complex is one of the largest gasifier-based power facility in the world, with a total output of approximately 2,400MW.

The power facility will be used to convert vacuum residue into synthesis gas (syngas), which in turn will used to produce purified hydrogen and fuel a combined cycle facility, as well as export to the national grid.

Air Products' vice-president global engineering and manufacturing and Jazan project director David Edmondson said: “We appreciate the ingenuity the Siemens team brought to this project.

“We especially value Siemens' and Air Products' joint team dynamic and collaboration throughout the design, manufacturing, and testing phases, which resulted in a timely delivery.”

Siemens has already tested one compressor unit at its Mega Test Center in Duisburg and the unit has been shipped to the site for commissioning and erection due to start in mid-2018.
