German manufacturing company Senvion has signed a contract with power supplier Energy Developments (EDL) to deliver wind turbines to a hybrid micro-grid in Coober Pedy, a remote town in South Australia.

Under the terms of the deal, Senvion will deploy two MM92 turbines from the company's 2MW portfolio. These will be used in an effective combination of solar and battery storage to reduce the town's dependence on diesel fuel.

Senvion's Australia managing director Chris Judd said: “Wind energy can play a very important role in helping remote communities and industries reduce their reliance on expensive fuels.

The new hybrid micro-grid project has received $18.4m funding support from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), an independent agency of the Australian federal government, which aims to increase the supply of cost-effective renewable energy in the continent.

ARENA's CEO Ivor Frishknecht said: “This is a next-generation off-grid project, taking advantage of advanced renewables and enabling technologies that have already been successfully trialled at off-grid locations such as King Island.”

With construction expected to commence in September this year, the new Coober Pedy hybrid micro-grid project is expected to begin its commercial operations in the second half of next year.

The nacelle and rotor blades for Senvion’s first off-grid wind project will be manufactured at the company’s production facilities in Portugal.
