Singapore-based Sembcorp Industries has commissioned the first 660MW unit of the Thermal Powertech Corporation India (TPCIL).
The coal-fired power plant is planned to generate 1,320MW of thermal power. It will have a second 660MW unit, which is expected to be operational from the third quarter of 2015.
The $1.5bn project is the first Indian project for Sembcorp, which owns a 65% stake in TPCIL through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Sembcorp Utilities.
Gayatri Energy Ventures, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gayatri Projects, is the joint owner in TPCIL with the remaining 35% stake.
The energy-efficient power project is situated in the coastal town of Krishnapatnam, Nellore, in Andhra Pradesh. It is equipped with supercritical technology, which brings down the emissions as compared to other conventional coal-fired facilities.
The plant has started supplying electricity to the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana after the completion of the first unit, to provide for the growing energy requirements in the southern region.
