Peterhead Port Authority in the UK has entered an agreement to support the development of turbine foundations of the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre (EOWDC) project.
The deal will see the commencement of offshore construction work of EOWDC, which is currently under development by Swedish energy group Vattenfall off the Aberdeen Bay in the UK.
Under the contract, Peterhead Port will be able to accommodate floating cranes with a maximum lifting capacity of 5,000t, as well as up to six barges that will transport the 11 turbine foundations to the wind farm.
The port will also house two supporting offshore construction vessels and a new project site office at the harbour for installation operations, which are expected to begin later this year.
To support the installation, Peterhead port will accommodate Vattenfall and its key supplier of the project Boskalis for around four months.
Boskalis will supply the offshore construction and carry out installation, including the foundations and cabling of EOWDC.

By GlobalDataWhen completed, the scheme is expected to be the first offshore wind project in the UK to deploy suction bucket jackets on a large scale.
It will be able to generate 309GWh of power annually and can meet the equivalent of 70% of Aberdeen’s domestic electricity demand and 23% of Aberdeen's total demand.
Vattenfall EOWDC project director Adam Ezzamel said: “We are sure the sheer scale and prominence of the pioneering technology and work involved with the EOWDC will create a positive renewables momentum for the region putting the north east at the centre of international offshore wind innovation.”
Last year, the company made an investment with Aberdeen Harbour Board to set up a base for its construction team and a warehouse unit that will support the EOWDC project throughout its lifetime.
