Global cable manufacturer Nexans has received a contract for supplying subsea power cables for the 1.4GW Norway-Germany high voltage direct current (HVDC) interconnector, NordLink.
Under the €500m deal, the French company will design, manufacture, and install two 525kV cable subsystems for the link, which will run from Tonstad in Norway and Schleswig-Holstein in Germany.
The cable subsystems will have a total length of 700km and will be installed away from the coast of Norway and Denmark.
The installations of the mass impregnated non-draining HVDC cables will be carried out at depths of around 450m. This process is set to be completed by 2019.
Global cable intends to start production of the cables at its Halden plant in Norway from 2016.
German bank KfW, Statnett, and TenneT are the developers for the 1.4GW project. The development will connect the Norwegian and German power markets, facilitating exchange of renewable energy.

By GlobalDataNexans senior executive vice-president for high voltage & underwater cables Dirk Steinbrink said: "The NordLink project will be Nexans’ largest subsea power cable contract to date in terms of length and value and we look forward to continuing our close working relationship with TennetT, KfW, and Statnett on this important project.
"We are excited to be involved in the Nord.Link which is a further step towards a complete integration of the European power grid."
While Germany will be able to export its surplus wind and solar power to Norway via the link, it is likely to receive exports of hydroelectric power from Norway.
The exchange will raise the security of power supply in both the countries and promote renewable energy generation.
Nexans recently set up the 140km subsea HVDC interconnector for the Skagerrak 4 project between Denmark and Norway.
