A new windfarm on the border of Scotland will help power Swiss food and beverage company Nestlé’s operations in the UK and Ireland.

Currently, power supplied to Nestlé’s grid comes from renewable sources. Nestlé’s UK and Ireland chairman and CEO Dame Fiona Kendrick said: "This is a newly commissioned windfarm, generating new energy, creating capacity that didn’t previously exist, and is capable of providing half of our electricity needs.

"It’s a proud moment for us and means we have reached another key milestone in our efforts to become a sustainable business."

"The project will be deployed with nine turbines with the capacity to generate nearly 125GWh per year."

The new deal has been signed for 15 years between Nestle and UK-based electric utility company Community Windpower.

Community Windpower’s managing director Rod Wood said: "We are delighted to be working with Nestlé by providing 50% of their energy requirements from our Sanquhar community windfarm project."

Under the terms of deal, the new project will be deployed with nine turbines. It will have the capacity to generate nearly 125GWh of power every year, which would be enough to meet the annual electricity demands of 30,000 Scottish households.
