National Grid has awarded a contract to the UK engineering solutions provider Costain for three transmission frameworks.

Under the contract Costain will provide a broad range of services, including front end engineering design, programme management, construction and asset optimisation.

National Grid has planned to invest up to £26bn (€31.1bn) between now and 2021 upgrading and developing gas and electricity networks.

The three frameworks, which are set to commence immediately, includes the installation of new overhead lines as part of a four-year deal, upgrading the UK’s gas transmission system, and to carry out work on underground cables.

Costain chief executive officer Andrew Wyllie said that the company is pleased to have been appointed to these frameworks by National Grid, for whom they are currently delivering the London Power Tunnels.

Wyllie said, "These awards are at the very heart of our ‘Engineering Tomorrow’ strategy of focusing on blue chip customers whose major spending plans are underpinned by strategic national needs.
