Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS) has been awarded a contract by Daewoo Engineering & Construction to supply two M501J gas turbines for the Pocheon combined cycle power plant, a gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) power generation plant in South Korea.

Under the contract, MHPS will deliver two M501J gas turbines, one steam turbine and three generators for the power plant, which is scheduled to go on stream in November 2016.

Located in Pocheon, a city approximately 45km north-west of Seoul, the GTCC plant will be built by Daewoo Energy, a special purpose company (SPC) affiliated with Daewoo Engineering & Construction.

Developed using proprietary MHPS technologies, the 60Hz M501J gas turbines can achieve the world’s highest level of efficiency and power generation capacity in systems of this type with turbine inlet temperatures of 1,600°C.

The GTCC is a high-efficiency power generation system capable of generating power with a combination of gas and steam turbines, utilising high-temperature exhaust gas from the gas turbine to produce steam to drive the steam turbine.

The configuration offers higher thermal efficiency while reducing fuel consumption and lowering emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) relative to electricity generation, thus reducing the system’s environmental impact.
