Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS) and Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) have signed a joint research agreement on measurement / combustion technology for gas turbines.

The two companies will work together on new combustion technology that uses less calorific value fuel efficiently, in preparation of introduction of low calorific value gases.

In November 2014, MHPS and KEPCO signed an MoU for joint researches and also to conduct annual technical exchange meetings.

The new agreement has been entered based on the previous MoU. The latest agreement will see MHPS’s advanced design technologies being blended with KEPCO’s production technology to achieve new concepts in combustion.

The two companies will carry out their testing work at MHPS’s combustion chamber and leverage the gas turbine combustion test facility at KEPRI, which is electrical power research institute of KEPCO.

This study is slated for three years.

Korea is one of the key markets for MHPS as there are more than 130 gas turbines for power generation in commercial operation.

From these 130 gas turbine units, 55 have been manufactured by MHPS, which also includes the Series gas turbine.

Korea’s public utility, KEPCO has six subsidiaries.

Last August, KEPCO established a demonstration-scale gas turbine combustion test facility to carry out research and development on the gas turbines it operates in the country.
