L-3 Communications MAPPS (L-3 MAPPS), a division of L-3 Marine & Power Systems, has won a contract from Guangdong Nuclear Power Joint Venture (GNPJVC) to replace the input/output (I/O) system at the Daya Bay nuclear power station’s scope simulator.
Under the contract, the company will replace the I/O system on the simulator’s main control room panels and related remote shutdown panels with the replacement work set to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2014.
Currently, the plant features the I/O system supplied by Thomson-CSF in 1992 that will now be replaced by L-3 MAPPS’s low power consumption compact controllers and Beckhoff Automation’s I/O modules that are managed by L-3 MAPPS’s Orchid Input Output software.
The scope of L-3 MAPPS’ work also includes replacing select simulator control room panel instruments with custom-designed equivalents (synchroscope), the rod position indicators and the sound generator. In total, around 13,000 I/O channels will be replaced.
Located near to Dapeng in Guangdong Province, the project has two pressurised water reactor generating units with a total electrical capacity of 1,968MW, producing around 14 billion kWh of electricity annually.
Operated by Daya Bay Nuclear Power Operations and Management, the two units commenced commercial operations in February and May 1994, respectively.

By GlobalDataOf the total annual power generation, 70% is imported by CLP, a 25% equity partner, to its Hong Kong system. In September 2009, the supply contract between them was extended to 2034.
L-3 MAPPS Power Systems and Simulation vice-president of marketing and sales Michael Chatlani said having already upgraded the platform and plant models on the simulator, GNPJVC will further benefit from the company’s compact I/O solution.
"L-3 MAPPS introduced compact I/O systems for power plant simulator projects more than five years ago, and we have garnered tremendous market acceptance for this capability ever since," said Chatlani.
