GT Energy has selected SLR Consulting to submit a planning application for the next phase of its proposed deep geothermal heat plant and district heating network in Manchester, UK.
Under the contract, SLR will be responsible for completing several environmental studies and the submission of a planning application for a district heating network.
It will be used to link the proposed heat plant site in the Ardwick area of Manchester to the Oxford Road corridor and the city centre.
SLR principal planner Alan Mitchell said, "This geothermal project is an innovative green energy development that has the scope to be replicated across the UK in similar urban environments and areas with similar geology."
Recently, SLR has helped GTE Energy to secure planning permission for the heat plant element of the scheme.
The project involves the drilling of two 3,200m deep boreholes and the development of an underground heat plant, which will have capacity to provide heat to about 6,000 homes and businesses.

By GlobalDataIn October 2013, GTE Energy started work on the next phase of its geothermal scheme that is expected to provide a safe supply of cheaper, renewable heat to homes and businesses in Manchester.
The company has initiated detailed geological evaluations to produce thermal models of the Devonshire Street site in the Ardwick area.
GTE Energy, which is investing around £0.45m for the new phase of the project, intends to commence drilling in spring 2015 and generate energy in spring 2016 from the geothermal resources located approximately two miles below Manchester in the Cheshire Basin.
