Fortis has announced the completion of the 335MW expansion of Waneta hydropower complex in British Columbia, Canada.
The $900m Waneta hydropower expansion project has been developed under a partnership between Fortis and Columbia Power and Columbia Basin Trust (CPCBT), which is wholly owned by the provincial government.
The Waneta Expansion project adds a second powerhouse, immediately downstream of the Waneta Dam on the Pend d’Oreille River, which shares the existing hydraulic head and generates clean, renewable, cost-effective power from water that would otherwise be spilled. It was completed six weeks ahead of schedule and on budget.
Work under the project included the construction of a 10km-long 230KV transmission line.
The development is located near the Waneta Dam on the Pend d’Oreille River. It generates enough energy to power approximately 60,000 homes annually.
BC Hydro and FortisBC will purchase the clean energy generated at the hydropower project, under a 40-year power purchase agreement.

By GlobalDataEarlier in October 2010, HydroWorld.com reported that SNC-Lavalin had secured a $575.6m contract to design and build the Waneta expansion after Fortis concluded definitive agreements for the project with CPCBT earlier that month.
The Aecon Group was also appointed to work jointly with SNC-Lavalin on the plant’s construction later in November 2010.
Fortis owns a 51% stake in the project, while Columbia Power Corporation and Columbia Basin Trust hold a 32.5% and 16.5%share, respectively.
