Enel Green Power (EGP), an Italian multi-national renewable energy firm, has started construction of a 61MW wind power project, called Talinay Poniente, which can generate more than 160 GWh a year in Chile, once operational.

The new farm, which is located in the Coquimbo region of Chile, will comprise of 32 wind turbines with a total installed capacity of 61MW.

"The Talinay Poniente project will generate electricity for approximately 60,000 homes and will prevent over 130,000t of CO2 emissions."

Expected to be operational by the first-half of 2015, the Talinay Poniente project will generate electricity for approximately 60,000 homes and will prevent over 130,000t of CO2 emissions.

The development of the plant will require an investment of around $140m.

The contract to build the farm was awarded in November 2013 following a tender process, which was conducted for Chile’s Central Region Transmission Network (SIC) by 26 distributors.

The power produced by the plant will be distributed to SIC’s transmission grid.

Talinay Poniente is located in the Coquimbo region, across from the 90MW Talinay Oriente wind farm, which has been operational since 2013.

In Chile, EGP operates two hydro plants with a total installed capacity of 92MW in addition to the Talinay Oriente and Valle de los Vientos wind farms, which have a total installed capacity of 180MW.

EGP is currently looking at several geothermal concessions with a potential capacity of more than 100MW.
