EDF Group has commissioned a 96MW Ensemble Eolien Catalan windfarm in the Languedoc-Roussillon-Midi-Pyrénées region of France.

The farm features stealth turbines and is the first of its kind worldwide to support the coexistence of windfarms and weather radars.

The turbines were developed by EDF Energies Nouvelles, Danish manufacturer Vestas, and international defence, security, and technology company QinetiQ.

Located in the municipalities of Calce, Baixas, Pézilla-la-Rivière, and Villeneuve-la-Rivière Pyrénées-Orientales department, the new farm features 35 turbines, with a capacity of 2MW-3MW each.

The project has been developed, constructed, commissioned, and operated by French renewable energy company EDF Energies Nouvelles, a subsidiary of EDF Group. EDF’s president and CEO Jean-Bernard Lévy said: "European leader in low-carbon electricity EDF Group is present on all renewable sectors.

"The windfarm is the first of its kind worldwide to support coexistence of windfarms and weather radars."

"As part of our CAP 2030 strategy, we will further accelerate our development in these energies in France. This illustrates our aim to build a diversified generation mix serving the energy transition.

"Technological innovation has always been at the heart of our commitment and will be a major driver of this development."

Currently, the 96MW project is the most powerful facility in France, surpassing the existing 87MW Salles-Curan farm, which was commissioned by EDF Energies Nouvelles in 2008.

The power generation capacity of Ensemble Eolien Catalan is equivalent to the electricity consumption of 120,000 people every year, or 25% of the total population of the Pyrénées-Orientales department.
