Danish wind turbine maker DONG Energy has selected Vestas Wind Systems as the preferred supplier to deliver the V164-8.0MW turbine for the Burbo Bank Extension Offshore Wind Farm in the UK’s west coast.
Located 7km off the English coast beside the existing Burbo Bank Offshore Wind Farm, the Burbo Bank Extension Offshore Wind Farm has a maximum capacity of 258MW.
DONG Energy said it aims to reduce the cost of electricity for offshore wind by 35-40% for projects sanctioned in 2020.
DONG Energy executive vice-president Samuel Leupold said that the performance of the 8MW turbine from Vestas is very promising.
"I see this as a very concrete step towards reducing the cost of electricity from offshore wind and a competitive market for all components is essential to accomplishing this," Leupold said.
"I look forward to working with Vestas and the other members of our supply chain to find further reductions in the cost of electricity."

By GlobalDataThe selection of Vestas is subject to the windfarm being awarded a Contract for Difference under the EMR FID-enabling regime.
The parties are expected to sign a detailed supply agreement later this year.
In December 2012, both companies signed an agreement to jointly work on a number of test activities for the prototype of the V164-8.0MW at the test centre in Østerild to speed up the turbine development.
Although DONG Energy has not taken any final investment decision to build the offshore wind farm, it is based on the formal permits and timetable, it could potentially be built from the second half of 2016.
