Power manufacturer Bharat Heavy Electricals (Bhel) has commissioned the first 500MW unit at the Chandrapur Super Thermal Power Project (STPP) Stage-III in Maharashtra, India.

Bhel is also expected to commission another 500MW unit for Stage-III of the project, which is likely to be commissioned by financial year 2015-16.

Maharashtra State Power Generation Company (MAHAGENCO) is the owner for the Chandrapur STPP.

Bhel was responsible for the design, engineering, manufacturing, supply, erection and commissioning of steam turbines, generators and boilers at the facility.

According to the terms of the contract signed with MAHAGENCO, the Indian power manufacturer also handled associated auxiliaries and electrical works at the plant, along with the state-of-the-art controls and instrumentation (C&I) and electrostatic precipitators (ESPs).

The Indian state had been dependent on Bhel for many of its power generation projects. More than 15,000MW of Maharashtra’s power capacity is supported by the firm.

Earlier in the month, Bhel had commissioned a 250MW thermal unit at the Sikka Thermal Power Station in Gujarat.

The company had also commissioned 600MW units for two thermal power projects, both in the state of Chhattisgarh. While one was installed at the Dainik Bhaskar Power’s (DBPL) upcoming 1200MW project located at Dhabra in Janjgir Champa District, the other one was for the 2,400MW OP Jindal Thermal Power Project.
