EDF Energy has announced that it has completed application of nuclear safety concrete for the Atkins and EDF-designed technical galleries, a network of connected tunnels at the 3,200MWe Hinkley Point C nuclear power station designed to carry cabling and pipes.
The detailed structural design of the technical galleries was created by Atkins as part of an ongoing programme of work helping EDF Energy deliver the 3,200MWe nuclear power project. The project is being carried out by the teams from Atkins’ Energy and UK & Europe businesses, in collaboration with colleagues from integrated project and programme management consultancy Faithful+Gould.
To ensure safer and quicker development, Atkins has made use of the latest digital engineering techniques to design the three dimensional (3D)-reinforced concrete model, in collaboration with the contractor BYLOR.
Atkins Energy UK and Europe Business director Christophe Junillon said: "Atkins’ digital engineering approach to the detailed design of the technical galleries, in collaboration with the contractor and our client, complements our 50 years’ of experience in the nuclear sector to help make construction safer and quicker.
“This milestone is a truly momentous occasion for the UK nuclear industry and an achievement we can all be very proud of.”
Once in operation, the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station will help in the UK’s transition to a low-carbon energy future. It is reported that construction of the building for the first reactor at HPC is scheduled to begin in 2019 when concrete will be poured to make the reactor platform.
