South Korean-based Alps Energy intends to deploy Southern Company’s Transport Integrated Gasification (TRIG) technology at the 1GW Alps Energy power plant, which is being developed at the Saemangeum industry and research area in South Korea.
A letter of intent to licence the coal-gasification technology has been signed between the Alps Energy and Southern Company subsidiary Southern Generation Technologies, under which the installation will be evaluated.
Developed by Southern Company and Kellogg, Brown & Root (KBR), TRIG has already been selected for deployment at Southern Company subsidiary Mississippi Power’s 582MW Kemper County coal-fired energy plant.
The technology converts low grade coal into gas, which is burned for power generation, and can ensure low emissions.
Alps Group chairman Kwang-Ouk Bang said: "We very much look forward to seeing successful initial operations of the Kemper County energy facility and to explore various opportunities to work together with the TRIG team in our landmark gasification project in Saemangeum."
The Kemper project is expected to be completed in 2016. At least 65% of the facility’s carbon emissions are expected to be captured and repurposed through enhanced oil recovery, which can increase domestic oil production.
