El Romero solar installation

Spanish Acciona subsidiary Acciona Energía will be developing the 246.6MW El Romero Solar power plant in Chile.

Expected to involve an investment of $343m, the facility will be built in the municipality of Vallenar within the Atacama Desert, about 645km north to the Chilean capital Santiago.

Construction works for the project, which has been scheduled for a mid-2017 commissioning, is expected to start soon.

The plant, which will be developed on a 280ha site, will have more than 777,000 polycrystalline silicon solar module installations on static metal structures for generation of power.

"We are very pleased to contribute to the availability of clean, quality energy in Chile through what will be our biggest photovoltaic plant."

Once commissioned, the solar photovoltaic (PV) project will be able to deliver nearly 505GWh of clean energy in a year, which will be sufficient to meet the power demands of around 245,000 homes in the country.

The renewable energy project will also reduce around 485,000 metric tons (mt) of carbon dioxide emissions in a year.
